1/3

Marrakech has a space it offers to the world. And one it offers to its inhabitants. Behind the polished murals guarding tourists, under-construction avenues and red building blocks constitute the new urbanistic landscape for the Marrakchis. Three hills rise above this, especially after the recent rains, drawing a new green coat across the land and offering citizens something rare: a third space, however temporary. A fraction of the day belonging to neither home nor work and even less to consumption: the 1/3. On these slopes, the asphalt ends and a different kind of time begins. Once a slave market or a restricted military zone that drew the first lines of colonial urbanism into the city, it is now where residents come for the mercy of the distance, pushing the chaos back down into the valley.

Presented as the physical culmination of SHEDDING, a photo-documentary program rooted in a shared humanistic process of socio-political fieldwork and curation, 1/3 debuted during the Mai de la Photo 2026. Produced by the WAH Collective alongside participating photographers Ait El Moumen Dounia, Youssef Sebti, Ayoub Alahyane, and Ismail El Aaddioui, the project was realized in partnership with the cultural center Les Étoiles de Jemaa el-Fna and l'Institut Français.

The exhibition was hosted at l'Institut Français in a space that directly overlooks one of the very hills we documented, physically anchoring the images to the landscape they represent. To ensure this collective visual record endures beyond the temporary walls of the gallery, the work was ultimately compiled and published as a book of photographs at the close of the exhibition, transforming our shared fieldwork into a permanent archive.
