Morocco has thirty-two child psychiatrists. It also has a man who walks into schools in a wig, for free, and it works.

Since 2020 I have photographed that man. He has no training in care, no title and no institution, and his working life consists of absorbing other people's distress and returning it in a form a room can accept. Psychological suffering here is carried in silence, spoken through humour, religion or the body, rarely through anything with opening hours. So the subject is not medical. It is a question of what a place permits to appear, and in what costume.

I photograph the intervals rather than the performance. The mask is not a metaphor. It is a survival strategy that functions, which is much harder to photograph than one that fails. (An ongoing project)
